This morning, my granddaughter made a mess in the kitchen, and I listened as my daughter instructed her to clean up her mess. I listened to my daughter‘s tone, her words, her patience, and in that moment I reflected on how different my daughter‘s response was, when compared the response I received from my parents and the response that I would’ve given as a mother when she was the age of my granddaughters. When I was seven, I was still living with my biological parents. And if I had spilled milk on the kitchen floor, I would’ve gotten beat, then I probably forced to drink the entire gallon of milk until I got sick and was throwing up. My childhood was torturous. It was cruel. I’m so grateful for my lineages’ courage to do better. When my daughter was seven years old, I was 23 years old. I was depressed, experiencing high levels of toxic stress, working and going to school, and had a side hustle, while still trying to repair and support the brokenness within my family. My response to her spilling milk on the kitchen floor, probably would’ve involved some yelling, some cussing and one or both of us crying.This morning, as I listened to my daughter, it was evidence of how far we’ve come. Evidence of the cycles that have been broken. This year, my husband would’ve been 50 years old. When he died, we said that we would honor his birthday every year with an ANNUAL KICKBACK. Kickback was the name given to him by his motorcycle brothers, because of his cool, calm, kickback demeanor. So, what better way to celebrate him than with an annual KICKBACK.
When our loved ones leave us, all we really have are the memories that we’ve created with them. And in order for us to keep those memories alive, to keep their legacy going, we have to keep saying their name. On March 3, 2025, it will be four years since my husband was tragically killed in an accident, and yet our granddaughters know who he is, because we continue to say his name.
Going forward, moving forward, we will continue to grow in his honor. Living fully. Operating with a high level of integrity. Pushing and supporting each other beyond our comfort zone. Being intentional. Living in our purpose. With every breath, honoring the life we still have.
